On Saturday May 10, Brooklyn’s AbunDance Academy of the Arts will be premiering the short film entitled, Pa'Lante in Brooklyn, NY! In a world of endless victories on the track, PA’LANTE tells the story of Afro - Latina twin siblings who dominate every race except the most elusive one: navigating the complexities of being human. Inspired by the real life story of Writer and Director, Karisma Jay, Pa'Lante honors the legacy of Miriam Browne, a former track and field star who was selected to represent Panama in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

Following the screening a panel discussion and talkback will be moderated by Dr. Fatou Gittens, Artist, Historian and Fellow Panamanian. Confirmed VIP invited guests include the NYC Commissioner of the Arts, Laurie Cumbo and Senator Kevin Parker. The event will also include our Live DJ and a Live Vocal performance by Indie Panamanian Artist Alessandra Clarke, also known as La Panameñita. The event will also host local vendors and will highlight DOVE's Body Confident Sport Initiative as well as Nike's Do it like a Girl campaign.

"This film is my love letter to my legacy and lineage being a Black woman, Caribbean woman and Afro-Latina. In memory of my great-grandmother, Pa'Lante redefines what it means to be Afro-Latina. Based on my great-grandmother's life, Pa'Lante tells the story of twin Track stars who learn that their great-grandmother was selected to represent Panama in the 1936 Olympics. Pa'lante explores the dynamics between mothers, their daughters and their granddaughters, including my own interactions with my mother, grandmother and grandmother in our Panamanian household and aims to showcase the multidimensionality of the Afro-Latina and Female Athlete experience." - Writer/Director of Pa'lante, Karisma Jay
